“The Center for Well-Being” project for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County demonstrates key advantages of offsite modular construction:
• Schedule Acceleration. The Center opened on time for Fall semester 2021 thanks to offsite modular construction. MODLOGIQ started the build inside our climate-controlled plant in fall 2020 -- months BEFORE demolition and site preparation even began. By moving up the starting line for building construction by at least 7 months, we also moved up the finish line for completion by at least 7 months (compared to a conventional site-built approach).
• Least Site Impact. The site is located in the heart of the busy UMBC campus. Offsite construction eliminated months of dust, dirt and safety hazards and avoided thousands of contractor trips and hundreds of deliveries to the site. Further, the site was hemmed in on 4 sides by 2 dorms, a sidewalk and street. Offsite avoided issues with laydown areas disrupting campus life.
• Cost Certainty. Snow and rain in early winter didn’t generate costly delays because the building was being constructed inside our plant – warm and dry. Even with dramatic weather due to Hurricane Ida, we were able to complete the job on time and avoid expensive delays.
About the Health Services and Counseling Facility • "The Center for Well-Being"
Just a short walk from Chesapeake and Susquehanna Halls on Center Road stands the newest building at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County: The Center for Well-Being. The $14 million two-story complex houses Retriever Integrated Health (Health Services, the Counseling Center, Health Promotion), Student Conduct and Community Standards and i3b’s Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being.
Dr. Kim Leisey, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, said that universities across the country are increasingly taking a holistic approach to student wellbeing. As a result, the Center for Well-Being defines student wellness through a “mind, body, and spirit” focus.
The Center’s ground floor houses Health Promotion, i3b’s Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being, a mind spa, Student Conduct and Community Standards and several reservable meeting spaces. On the second floor, which is elevator-accessible, is the Counseling Center, University Health Services and several more shared conference rooms.
